How Can We Save Children from Technology Addiction?

How Can We Save Children from Technology Addiction?

Children are not dependent on technology at school. However, it is dependent on social media, games and the Internet at home.

How can families save their children from this addiction?

VIETNAM WAR

During the Vietnam War, American soldiers met drugs and 20% of them returned to the country as drug addicts.

Then something interesting happens.

Professor at the University of Washington Lee Robins discovers that 93% of the soldiers returning as drug addicts have quit drugs. Only 7% continue to be dependent.

Why 93% quit drugs and 7% quit? What is the difference between these two groups?

THE CAUSE OF ADDICTION

The group of 7% is already dependent on people. When he meets the drug, his addictions appear immediately.

But the other group is not inclined to be dependent. He's just using drugs to deal with stress in a war environment. When the stressful environment disappears, drug use ceases.

So, when the stress disappears, why doesn't the 7% group drop the drugs?

CONTINUOUS STRESS

Because their lives are already stressful, whether they are war or not, in America or Vietnam.

People who are prone to addiction have experienced childhood traumas or have grown up without the emotional support of the family.

In these people; fear of abandonment, loneliness, lack of self-confidence or social phobias.

It also develops addiction to deal with them.

In short; The cause of addiction is not drugs, but the people themselves and their needs.

Why do these people tend to be addictive?

BRAIN STRUCTURE

Trauma or emotional distance from the family changes the brain structure.

Such people have much less dopamine receptors in their brains than normal. (Dopamine is the brain's pleasure hormone.)

When the brain does not produce much dopamine, people meet their needs from substances such as drugs, alcohol or activities such as gambling and sex.

In other words, childhood experiences make a person prone to addiction.

CHILD AND TECHNOLOGY

Returning to Internet or game addiction; probably 93% of children, like non-addictive soldiers, turn to computers because their lives are stressful. How Does?

Boy is bored at school. No discovery in classes. Homework is boring. He can't play outside. Can't socialize with friends. He can't spend quality time with his family. There is control and judgment in the family. The child is not given autonomy. The child cannot make his own choices. The boy has no hobby. He can't play sports or engage in art. It does not meet the need for development. Far from nature.

TECHNOLOGY MEETS NEED

What does the child do? Relationship, development, selection and discovery needs to meet the need for computers. So, the environment (Vietnam war environment) creates computer addiction in the child.

(Of course, your child may also be in 7%. It may be addictive. In this case, you will need professional support such as medication or therapy.)

CHILD-ORIENTED SOLUTION

As a result, the cause of addiction is not the computer, but the child itself and the environment.

If we want to eliminate this addiction, then we need to reorganize the child's real life, home and school environment.

In this case, the child's dependence will disappear or be reduced. They will use the computer not for being dependent, but for creative activities such as coding and design, or for information. If this does not work, professional support should be sought.
